These paintings are a set four portraits of the daughters of Louis XV of France, symbolizing the four elements of Earth (Louise Elisabeth), Fire (Madame Henriette), Air (Madame Adelaide), and Water (Madame Victoire).
The paintings were ordered by Louis XV in 1749 to decorate the south wing of the Palace of Versailles, and were done by Jean Marc Nattier between 1750 and 1751.
